About

We empower budding and professional florists by providing resources, inspiration and tools related to Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. We aim to provide high quality, professional-grade kenzan, containers, and other Ikebana tools that are difficult to find outside of Japan, and provide advice and inspiration for those who would like to incorporate elements of Ikebana into their own floral arts.

We serve not only Ikebana practitioners, but also floral designers, and arrangers from all sorts of floristry practices. We believe that the precision of Ikebana, its understanding of linear composition and balance are all applicable to English, Dutch and other schools of floral arrangements. It is in our hopes that more floral arrangers will see Ikebana beyond a closed category of forms but rather an open philosophy and a set of techniques to take inspiration from. We would also like to go beyond the conventional image of Ikebana. Too often, Ikebana is though of as "traditional," only in followed in Japan and difficult to approach without the proper training, when really Ikebana is a contemporary and open practice, and one which continues to grow, innovate, and can be radical at times.

We hope to share our passion for practice of Ikebana and to introduce its techniques, tools and philosophy into other forms of floristry and flower arranging with the hopes that both practices will flourish.

Lastly, we aim to form a community at Rear Spring Room around our interest in Ikebana, a place where both seasoned practitioners and newcomers to the art can gather to share inspiration and techniques and develop their own appreciation for the art.

Supporting the Local Creative Community

We work with local pottery artists who are interested in the special form of Ikebana containers. The containers in the practice of Ikebana is very different from Western vases. Different category of containers are meant for different basic Ikebana form. (It is a very structured practice!) Coming up very soon, we will be featuring artists whose work we admire.
